SENSATIONAL SCENES IN BILBAO AS SPURS’ 17 YEAR WAIT FOR TROPHY ENDS

Glory, glory Tottenham Hotspur

He said it! “I always win in my second year”. Words echoed by Tottenham Manager Ange Postecoglou at the start of the season and given the year Spurs have had (especially in the premier league) you wouldn’t be wrong not believing Ange’s statement. That is how awful Tottenham have been; however, we have all had to take back criticisms directed at the Tottenham manager as he masterminded their road to victory in the Europa League.

Spurs have been crowned champions by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final through a very scrappy but decisive Brennan Johnson goal. This victory marks Tottenham’s first trophy in 17 years since their 2008 carabao cup (Worthington as it was known back then) win. This win also represents Tottenham’s 3rd cup victory in the competition having previously won it in 1972 and 1984 respectively.

This is the moment the Spurs supporters and fans have been waiting for. A moment of joy, a moment of pride, a moment of victory. No longer will Spurs be synonymous with being bottle jobs (I think that stigma now lingers in the red side of North London). The players and Postecoglou have done their supporters proud. Spurs club captain, Son deserves this trophy for the loyalty he has shown to the club. Now let’s be brutally honest, Spurs have been absolutely woeful in the league, losing 21 games in a domestic season is nothing to write home about and neither is languishing in 17th position but I guess the win definitely makes up for it.

The match itself could have been more entertaining given the fact that both clubs needed the victory to rescue what has been an appalling season by all accounts (not to mention their respective managers fighting for their jobs). Spurs battled and dug deepest when it mattered most, the defence was solid and led well by Romero putting in a man of the match performance. The midfield trio of Sar, Bentancur and Bissouma were sublime (just endless running and grit). Udogie had a good game, as did Porro and that last ditch clearance by Van de Ven is stuff of legends. Solanke led the line well as always and Richarlison and Johnson put in a shift also. The Spurs goalkeeper, Vicario showcased his shot stopping attributes as he made some important saves, non-more so that the last minute save from a Luke Shaw header.

United, to their credit did create chances and both Amad and club captain Fernandes always looked threatening going forward. Perhaps one could argue that Man United manager Amorin got it tactically wrong and made late changes in personnel, or it could be that Ange got it right and made the necessary changes to finally get Spurs over the line. One thing is for sure, White Hart Lane will be buzzing all summer long. Congratulations Tottenham Hotspur – Europa League Champion 2024-25.

Tottenham Hotspur – Europa League Winners!!!!
