Geordies of Wembley
After 70 years of wait, Newcastle United finally end their major trophy drought after winning the Carabao Cup in emphatic fashion. The club had come close to attaining glory in the past, however, they’d always struggle to get over the line. A moment that will live in Newcastle supporters’ minds will always be the infamous season they were expected to win the Premier League under the stewardship of Kevin Keegan, but ended up runners up to Sir Alex Furgeson’s Manchester United. However, whilst that moment languishes forever in the history books, the Geordies are back in shining glory.
The Magpies were the underdogs going into the finals against Liverpool who are regarded as arguably the best team in the premier league this season. Liverpool Manager Arne Slot had plenty to do in raising the spirits of his team having been knocked out of the Champion League by PSG earlier in the week. Therefore, the expectation that Liverpool would be considered the overwhelming favourites came as no surprise. This should have been their crowning glory under the Slot regime. Unfortunately for the Reds, the Magpies had other ideas.
Liverpool looked lethargic and quite simply just could not get into gear. Perhaps one could argue that the midweek champions league game against PSG took a lot out of the team or perhaps we could all agree that Newcastle were the better side. The Magpies, full of energy and ambition from the first whistle took the game to Liverpool creating chances after chances and always looked like breaking the deadlock. Each player wearing the black and white stripes gave 100% in contrast to a lacklustre Liverpool side who didn’t show up to Wembley. Mo Salah was nowhere to be seen (the question is does he ever turn up to finals? Just a thought!!).
Dan Burn opened the scoring in the 45th minute with a fabulous header to put Newcastle ahead. Newcastle continued to apply pressure and were soon rewarded when in-form striker, Alexander Isak found the back of the net with a well taken finish. The Toon Army erupted as cheers roared throughout Wembley and Tyne Side no doubt. The dream was about to become a reality and although Liverpool did score in injury time through Chiesa, the stars were already aligned as Newcastle won 2-1.
Popular Newcastle sons, Alan Shearer, Ant and Dec could be seen engaging in jubilation with the Newcastle faithful at Wembley. The celebrations will continue throughout the week and possibly the month even and why not, they have waited a long time for this moment and should enjoy every minute of it. The Newcastle Manager Eddie Howe, deserves credit for this turnaround and performance also. Newcastle are currently 6th in the league and have every chance of finishing in the top 4 (what a season they’ve had).
Liverpool meanwhile only have themselves to blame as they went from competing for 4 major honours to one. With the gap they have built up in the league, they should be crowned premier league champions in May, if not sooner. It would be still be regarded as a massively impressive and successful season for Slot in his first season. However, Liverpool supporters and fans alike will be hoping that the team does not implode and concede the title (now that would be an unforgivable disaster. Stevie G comes to mind).

Newcastle United Win the Carabao Cup 2025!!!!!
